Position: Hatchery Technician II

Location: Burnett Inlet Hatchery, Etolin Island, AK

The Burnett Inlet Hatchery is located 15 minutes SW of Wrangell by air, on Etolin Island.  It is a remote facility, accessible by floatplane or boat only.

The hatchery produces 1.9 million Summer Coho and 24 million S. Chum for SSRAA’s Anita Bay release site.

Living Conditions:

The position would require living in a furnished rental apartment within the hatchery bunkhouse: power, phone, and wireless Internet provided.  Satellite TV equipment and programming is at Technician’s expense, as are long distance telephone calls. There are 2 grocery / mail flights per month provided by SSRAA, and in addition the employee is provided with 1 flight to Wrangell and 1 night in a hotel per month.

The main issue with the remoteness is that you do not leave your work site.  You are in close proximity with your co-workers 24 /7.  If you are the type of person who must have space from the work site, and co-workers at the end of the day, then this is NOT the place for you.

It rains a lot.  This is a temperate rainforest, and is aptly named.  We get about 135 inches of rain annually.

Recreation:

Recreation options are limited by remoteness.  Most activities revolve around nature: fishing, hunting, hiking, and camping. There are no roads, coffee shops or malls.  There is a skiff available for limited recreation use.  The fishing is excellent; halibut and salmon can be caught in close proximity to the hatchery, and shrimp and crabbing within a 15-minute skiff ride.

Duties would include but not be limited to:

Performance of fish culture, maintenance and construction projects around the hatchery. All aspects of hatchery operations as they relate to the spawning, egg incubation and early rearing husbandry of salmonids.  Because of the remote location, the position would share responsibility for maintenance, equipment repair, and construction to assist in providing self-sufficiency to hatchery operations.

Qualifications:

Ideal applicant should have at least an Associate of Arts degree or an Associate of Science degree in aquaculture or in a closely related field or one year experience at a Pacific Salmon Hatchery; remote field work and fish rearing will also be considered.

A general carpenter, plumbing, electrical, aluminum welding and etc. experience will also be considered.

Salary Range:               $15.16 – $16.80 (compensation beyond starting range is DOE)

Benefit package includes Health, Dental, life and long-term disability insurance and a retirement plan.

SSRAA is an equal opportunity employer
